Cambodia reports first Zika case | Bangkok Post: news

PHNOM PENH: The Cambodian government confirmed on Friday that it had detected the country's first case of Zika virus infection in recent years. It marks the first Zika case detected in Cambodia since 2010 and the eighth since 2007, according to a ministry statement. Some countries have also reported a steep increase in Guillain-Barre syndrome -- a neurological disorder that could lead to paralysis and death -- for which the Zika virus is believed to be a trigger. The Zika virus, for which there is no vaccine of specific treatment, has been detected in Africa, the Americas, Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. The Zika virus is transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes biting during the daytime.
